let's save time
Me, to colleague: Well, we can spend a lot of time talking about whether we're really going to do this thing I want or not, but at the end of the day, we're going to decide to do it, so we'll save all that time if we just jump to figuring out how to make it happen.

wow. i've had people say that to me when they were trying to be bulldozers about whether something got done or not. sometimes it was a terrible idea and really needed to not happen, too.

not saying that's what your situation is, just that the verbiage is nearly word for word.

I don't see how that statement could be read as anything BUT bulldozing. I said it with a smile, but my goal was to signal that I see the conclusion as foregone, and the discussion as one of how rather than if.

Obviously, there are few settings where this is an appropriate approach; but I'm not a social idiot, so everyone came out of the conversation happy and optimistic and doing what I wanted.

:-)
I end up saying this to myself a lot. I'm eventually going to decide to do X, and I'm eventually going to be OK with that decision, so how about I cut to the chase?
Sometimes it even works. I often refer to this as negotiating with future Dave.
