conversational autopilot
You know this conversation?

you: Hey, Bob, how are you?
bob: Hey, good, thanks, how are you?
you: Good, thanks! How 'bout you?
...

I hate it when I do that. It's right up there with replying, "Fine, thanks!" when the teller at the bank asks, "How can I help you?"

I'm feeling: amusedamused

and when you say, "you, too!" when your waiter or the person at the take out place hands you your food and says, "enjoy this pad thai!"

Or, similarly, a "You too!" to the cabbie who wishes you a good trip when dropping you off at the airport.

And, my favorite mistake I make annually:

friend: Happy Birthday!
me: Thanks, You, too!

(which works for maybe three of my friends whose birthdays are near mine)

Happy my birthday tooo youuuu!
Vinnie Teslavinnie_tesla on November 11th, 2010 03:39 am (UTC)
This happens to me almost every day.

Every. Time.

And then there's

me: Hi Bob!
Bob: Fine, thanks.

That's because we use these conversational snippets not to convey information, but for conversational synchronization (think of start/ACK/stop packets in networking)

When someone starts a conversation with "Hey, how are you?" I often respond: "do you want the socially-correct answer or the truthful answer?"

Do you not think conversational synchronization is useful?
Jim Pjim_p on November 11th, 2010 04:19 am (UTC)
Oh yes, I think it's very useful. I just sometimes like to tweak with the protocol :)

But in this case it's more like
    SYN -->
        <-- SYN/ACK
SYN/ACK -->
        <-- WTF?

[for you non-networking geeks, that's the packet exchange that starts a TCP/IP connection, except the third packet is supposed to be just ACK and there's no WTF? packet (but there should be).]

Sounds like it's time to write another RFC... think we can have it ready by 1 April? :)

I don't remember the WTF flag in the TCP header. Clearly an unintentional omission.
Chipceo on November 11th, 2010 03:43 am (UTC)
The one I do all the time is "How you doin'?" "Not much". Or, conversely, "What's up?" "Not bad".
