That's worse than normal
There's a man on the board of WB who I've met a handful of times in the years I've worked here. Every time I've met him, he's done that thing where he stands too close and pays me a lot of exaggerated and physical attention without actually appearing to notice me as a person at all.

Even so, I didn't realize just how bad it was until just now, when he introduced himself to me, asking, "Have we met?" When I said we had several times, he asked if I'm a volunteer? I was sitting at my desk at the time, and said that, no, I've been an employee here for 2 1/2 years.

Oddly, I didn't find myself looking for ways to make the conversation less awkward for him, because wow.

Please help me understand what you mean to say with this comment? I don't understand why it should matter if he does this to me alone or if it's how he treats all women. I also don't understand why your past sexism is relevant.

Er. I wish i hadn't just read the comments.

Um. Anyway. What i was going to say is that i had a similar experience at my previous place of employment with a board member, and the man could never remember my name, though we had been introduced a number of times. I am terrible with names myself, so i am forgiving around that. But i was generally in my cubicle at the time, which had my nameplate on prominent display.

Awkward. And never a favorite part of my day. I am sorry that it happened to you as well. Good thing you're outta there soon anyway :)

Yeah, that's pretty bad.

My current employer has a pretty great board, but I have been generally unimpressed by the boards of the various NPOs I've worked for. Boards seem to attract people who are very fond of their own navels.

I appreciate not making his life socially easier. However, he sounds like someone who would not even notice that the conversation was awkward.

I keep trying to come up with things to say, but have only ellipses.

I was going to say maybe it was a deliberate, intentional means of "trying to get to know more about you". So he's in your space, he asks questions about what you do there even though he may have a vague idea...however he may be socially-challenged to the point of thinking this is a way to find out more about what you do and thus create a rapport. Despite the fact that he should (and even might) know/recall you from previous meetings.

Despite, nothin'. If he were sincerely but awkwardly trying to get to know her, he'd recognize her after multiple meetings.

"Have we met?"

"Yeah, I think so, that time you were staring at my breasts. Oh, wait, no, that's not when we met! Now I remember - we met that other time you were staring at my breasts; sorry I forgot about it for a moment."

No, I don't think so. I think it was the time I turned around and caught you eying my ass.

That sounds like an adequate investment of time and effort.
