What makes you feel powerful? How often do you feel powerful?

The right music makes me feel powerful. The right clothes sometimes make me feel powerful. A good night's sleep helps. The ability to make other people laugh makes me feel on top of things and in control. A good session of writing makes me feel powerful.

That's...uh...that's off the top of my head. Knee-jerk reactions.

Feeling like I'm on top of things. Finally tackling something I had been dragging on because I knew it would be complicated, and finishing it. Throwing N up in the air and noticing just how much upper-body strength I've gained in the last half a year.

Pretty often, these days!

Many things do, but one of them is being outside, walking around in the dusk, when there is an impending summer storm, in the period right before rain hits and the wind gusts through trees, making impatient whooshing noises while the clouds gather and the electricity builds. There's just so much anticipation of great powerful things, and I love to get caught up in it.

Er, um... when I'm riding well. Which is almost always (after all, 20 years and probably 100K miles), but sometimes I'm my usual dorky self, even on a bike. *laugh*

working with horses, for instance? there's something about collaborating so closely with something so large and alien that's very powerful-feeling. though i guess it's "power with" and not "power over", to make the classical distinction. a couple times a week for that maybe :)

Massaging, to absolutely no one's surprise. A good writing session. Successfully negotiating a difficult interaction with another human. Those crazygood orgasms. Grinding my own flour to bake with. Doing a tough yoga move that I couldn't before. Manipulating my garden's environment to produce more. Love.

I seem to have crafted as much of my life as possible to help me live within my own power, so yeah, I feel powerful a lot.

Oh, this is complicated.

So, there's at least three different ways of feeling powerful I recognize, and they have nothing to do with each other.

One is what I can best describe as being in flow... where I know what I'm doing and I know I'm going to do it and events are working their way to their subsequent events and I am part of the mechanism that brings that about. There's an enormous sense of power there, although very little sense of choice. It's an awesome feeling.

I haven't felt that way in a long time. I miss it.

What makes me feel powerful in that sense is doing what I need to do, over and over and over again. There is something inexpressibly absurd about the fact that I know what to do to get this thing that I want, and I'm not doing it.

But I digress.

Another way I feel powerful is by seeing my influence... where when I do things, I can see results happening in the world. There's enormous freedom there, and it's very gratifying, though I don't actually enjoy the feeling much.

I feel powerful in this sense quite a lot.

A third way is something I don't have words for... a kind of physiological surge, a "RAAAAR!" moment. Adrenaline rush, I suppose, though often without the associated sense of anxiety. I can generally invoke this feeling whenever I choose, but I don't do it much. I used to, when I was younger. Still, it comes in handy when I'm exercising or when I have to lift heavy stuff, and it's sometimes fun during sex.

Cranking up a long upgrade at >20mph on the bicycle. I wasn't able to do this until relatively recently, so it's pretty exhilarating.

Particularly when I blow past your bike-nerd housemate partway up. :-) Which is kind of unworthy of me, especially as he could undoubtedly have dusted me without great effort had he cared to.

When I create something. When he gets that look in his eyes. When a question is raised and I know the answer. When I am doing something I do well and easily. When I achieve something that is difficult for me.

For the past year, my back has been severely limiting my ability to use my physical power. I'm still strong, but if I use that strength, my back will move in ways that will hurt a lot tomorrow. I grieve for that and hope to heal and be able to use my strength again.

I'm part of a rather large, active, international forum on beekeeping. Recently, I answered someone's question and shortly after there was another comment from a man who's been keeping bees for longer than I've been alive. His comment was basically "what heinleinfan said".

I felt very powerful.

It wasn't just that the compliment made me feel good, I mean, it did, but it was the...realization that my knowledge and experience has the potential to teach others, and enhance their knowledge and abilities.

I do not feel at all powerful on a daily basis in my life.
