How many jobs have you held as an adult?
I'm feeling: curiouscurious

Jobs or types of jobs? 1 IT/Sysadmin, 1 Teaching Assistant, ? Research Assistant (3 years grad school), about eight programming jobs (some contracting, some not).

Define "adult" please? Define "job"?
I know you're going to say 'define them as you please' but I figured I'd ask anyway.

Re: Define "adult" please? Define "job"?
I'm interested in how you define those! :D

What's fascinating about this for me is that I do not consider "adult" to have started on a particular date. Rather, there is a job I held as an adult simultaneously with one that I held not as an adult -- and I think generally during a period of a year or two around that time I would consider some of the things I was doing "adult" and some not.

In college: babysitting (2 regular gigs), RAship

In grad school: grad school, summer internship, TA-ing

Post grad school: one one-year temp gig, one tenure-track (still going)

I count that as two jobs, or sometimes one, since my current job is the only one I've ever had that was ongoing as opposed to explicitly temporary.
Kcatkcatalyst on January 6th, 2014 09:59 pm (UTC)
So yes this means I was 30 before I had a real adult job.

I'm going to count this as "how many different companies have you worked for longer than a month?"

14. I may have missed a couple.

Kind of arbitrarily defining it as "jobs held post-college-graduation": five. One in the textbook department of my college bookstore for a couple of years, four (some overlapping) tech/web-related jobs, including the current place where I've been for 12 years.
whynotkaywhynotkay on January 6th, 2014 10:18 pm (UTC)
Undergrad: four summer jobs (for the same company each time, but different groups and different locations).
During grad school: two summer jobs (for the same company both summers, but different groups).
[Does grad school count as a job?]
Post grad school: two jobs (although the first one crossed three companies between mergers and acquisitions).

I'm excluding volunteer work (once a week for four years), and one one-day paid acting gig).

I'm thinking I crossed the adult line (for jobs) when I entered grad school, but perhaps leaving grad school should really be the time that counts.

I'm not going to count on-campus jobs during either college or cooking school, nor my summer job during college, but I do count both of my internships during cooking school. (I think the dividing line for me is whether or not I was relying on that income to pay for my rent.) So:
1 apartment management
1 part-time line cook position
2 cooking internships
2 non-profit admin/development gigs
1 food pantry directorship
1 current development gig
8 jobs
Madame Blue aka Pygmentsweetmmeblue on January 7th, 2014 12:14 am (UTC)
Starting at 16
A total of 22 including things I did under the table and internships. I did not include the work I did for the peer advisement office or psychology department. They didn't feel like "jobs". I did include the weekend admin work my best friend and I did for the real estate agency and the babysitting/childcare work I did.

Wow, I've done some stuff...
I'm going to count the college jobs because they paid rent. Several of these overlapped at least a little.

3 years - retail at a Mailboxes Etc., plus admin work for the two other businesses of the franchise owners (PR firm and guest house in Maine)

1 school year - editorial internship at a magazine for parents and caregivers of children with disabilities

1 month - Marty's Liquors in Allston (included mostly for humor value)

3 months - admin for a high school summer program in media at the college I'd just graduated from

2-ish years - temp jobs, mostly admin support or conference registration staffing
(amusing note: I worked reg during a conference my future father-in-law attended ;)

1 year - temp admin job at the international business arm of the Harvard Medical School

a few months - editorial internship at the Harvard Med School newsletter

1 year - editorial internship at medical sales publisher

1 year - afterschool teacher at Harbor Point housing community (during grad school)

2 months - children's librarian at a small urban library
(commuting Brookline <--> Lawrence by T = FUN!)

15+ years - 5 different positions at 3 different locations of a large urban library - children's librarian (2x), reference librarian, branch manager, web librarian

8 jobs, 6 companies (if you include the 2 grad school internships)
Stephghislaine on January 7th, 2014 03:02 am (UTC)
Hmm, ok, those were all post-college "adult" jobs. If you count the ones during college...
1 retail
1 restaurant hostess
2 admin assistant
1 data entry

So now that gets me to 13 jobs.
