Yesterday, I developed a sudden strong hankering for oysters. This is a little unusual, because I usually get hit with those when the weather's warmer, but, ok! I mean, oysters!

So, I dragged uberjay to Russel House Tavern, where we had awesome drinks and EXCELLENT oysters, including the mild in flavor but perfectly meaty tender Ichabods and the Island Creek and Pleasant Bay were both brinier and delicious. We would happily have eaten more Cape Codders, but they were our least favorite, so after the first round, we focused on the others.

How much can I not wait for summer and oysters and cocktails on a patio? Any patio will do, really, but I have some in mind.

I have to say, I almost always prefer raw to cooked, when it comes to oysters, with the exception of deliciously roasted buttery ones. But I find that when cooked, they're often kind of overwhelmingly fishy/sea-y and kind of chewy, whereas raw, they're tenderly meaty with a much more interesting balance of flavors.

When you try them, I recommend going somewhere that has several kinds, because they can vary substantially, so not liking one doesn't necessarily mean you won't like another. Start with something really mild, and go from there.

Also, I would recommend a squeeze of lemon or a dash of vinegar. The sour-salty combo is magic. I'm getting excited just talking about it!
