Same sex marriage

With all the action happening in MA on the question of same sex marriage, I'm gettting tons of notices about What to Do to encourage my legislators to Do the Right Thing and legalize same sex marriage, etc. And, of course, there's lots going on on the national level, and in lots of states all over the country. Apparently, now is the time for this to be the hot topic.

In all this, it's a no-brainer for me to write my congresscritters NOT to vote for a defense of marriage amendment to any constitution (state or federal), because it's clear to me that what the amendments are about are expanding freedoms (other than prohibition, and we all know how well that went over), and this would be limiting freedoms in a really stupid way. (Is limiting freedom ever smart? A question for another post.)

But I feel far more ambivalent about getting into the fray on the active legalization of same sex marriage. Obviously, I'm for it, but I just can't see putting a lot of effort into it as an issue. In part, that's because I see it as inevitable. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but... eventually, it'll happen. But beyond that, there's a part of me that's so ambivalent about the institution of marriage that I'd really rather see it collapse under its own weight and be replaced by something more sensible that. If this issue helps it on its way down, hurrah.
