ruthless compassion

Today is mother's day here in Guatemala. That means that starting around 5am and continuing until about 10, people were setting off firecrackers and bombas in celebration and honoring moms. Some people also hire singers or singing groups to serenade their moms in the morning. It's all very sweet, if somewhat noisy.

I tried chicharrones for the first time (fried pork rind) and I don't think I'll be rushing out to try it again. It's pretty popular here, but I think I'll stick with chips.

I have a lot of mysterious bug bites. I can't tell if it's fleas again or something different. The good news is that this trip I brought my handy-dandy spray-it-in-the-bed repellant stuff. Woohoo!

I never know if people complimenting my Spanish are doing so because I have a good accent, because I really speak well, in general, or because they want something from me.

Projects for the week: find dental floss, birth control pills.
