was were what?

A conversational snippet from my dream last night:

me: If none were there, it wouldn't be an issue.
other person: You mean if none was there...
me: No, actually, "none" is singular, and in this case of a subjunctive statement, it takes "were".
him: That's true, but "was" is gaining more popularity in common use.
me: Yes, and technically, the popular use argument means that either "were" or "was" would be correct, but I prefer "were"...

I'm scared of my dream self.
