ruthless compassion

You know that sweet, curling flutter you get when you see someone you have a crush on? The hot zing of extended eye-contact, broken by one of you with lowered eyes, and, perhaps, a blush?

In many ways, the dance up to the first kiss is as much fun as the kiss, itself. The flirtation ebbs and flows. Neither of us is yet at the point of going all-out and proposing a date, so, instead, we see each other by circumstance, when we both happen to be in the same place at the same time. Slow, shy, sidelong looks dissolve into more obvious marks of interest: broad smiles, cautious touches (first on elbow, shoulder, later on waist, back, hips), insinuation in every word.

When the attraction crackles, that's when I know that it's going somewhere. And I like that steaming, sulty, slow-motion moment leading up to that first soft touch of lips, hands sliding to find the comfortable resting place on this new body, eyes sharing the long, lingering look until our faces are so close that the image blurs.

Yes, the dance is fun, but the kiss is sweeter.
