ruthless compassion

On some level, at this point in my life, it doesn't feel like a new year has really clicked over until I have another strange pick-up attempt.

I was working at the library today, after meeting up with my colleague, Becky, to discuss one of the projects we're working on, and when we finished, she left the cafe (oh, did you know the Copley library now has a nice little cafe with free web access? also, a restaurant!) and I stuck around for another 30 minutes to do more work before heading home...

As I was shifting my coat and bag to a chair that would be out of the way, the man at the next table over caught my eye.

"What are you working on?" he asked. I explained I was doing research for my job, and he wanted to know what I was finding. I told him he'd have to get back to me in a few months, and then, of course, I could have slapped myself for suggesting that. Fortunately, he missed his opening, probably because he was too busy getting his next line together, which was that he was telling me he's an author.

"Ah, very good, what kind of books?" I think I asked, but he didn't hear me, so I got back to work. And he kept shooting glances my way and rifling through his pockets. A minute later, he gave me his card, saying, "Here, you see, I'm an author!"

Sure enough, the header on his card reads, "THE GREATEST AUTHOR". That clears up all my doubts on the subject, of course. His website is www.SunnyAbakwue.com, if you're curious. I don't think I'll be calling him, but I have his card if anyone wants it :)

So it's not as entertaining, all told, as the personal trainer/rapper from last February, but I think it does indicate that the new year has officially begun.
