ruthless compassion

On my way out to Groton yesterday, I was driving west on Route 2. The car immediately in front of me was one of those JERKS who climbed up on the bumper of the car in front of him trying to get that car to pull into the right lane and get the hell out of his way. The car in front of him wasn't accommodating him, apparently, so he decided to zip around, jerkily.

Now, this is a maneuver I've seen a dozen times, and I'm always impressed with how much attitude people can convey with a few hasty jerks of the wheel. This time, however, the vehicular expletive was interrupted when he didn't manage to clear the bumper of the car in front of him, and instead, clipped it badly.

Both cars swerved, there was a loud bang, broken glass, and other such excitement. Fortunately, neither spun out, and after some wobbling, both managed to maintain control of their vehicles and get to the side of the road.

I'm glad to say that I was giving the car ahead enough space to avoid trouble myself, and the jerky car... well, it looked like it was going to be a sad car for a while. I felt bad for the unsuspecting car in front, but what a delightful schadenfreud in the case of the jerky one.
