ruthless compassion
Today, the official Thanksgiving Day, marks the midpoint of my week of giving thanks. I have greatly enjoyed reading others' posts and comments along these lines, as taking time to savor the goodness of life brings that goodness to the fore.

Today, I give thanks for humor. It seems like a little thing, but it makes such a difference! I think I tend to be more sincere than funny much of the time -- certainly when writing! -- but there's nothing like a good belly-laugh to turn a day around. Dave Barry, Get Fuzzy, Calvin & Hobbes, Dykes to Watch Out For, Jon Stewart... where would we be without them?

Humor, too, allows us not to take ourselves too seriously, to laugh at ourselves, and to know that even if today is rough, tomorrow will look up. A sense of humor, the ability to appreciate and inject levity, are essential in people who are close to me, and I love all the forms it takes.
