ruthless compassion
Shortly, I will be heading out to take the train to Portland (for the first time! normally I go by bus) to meet a new addition to humanity. That makes today a good day to be thankful for two things: babies and ease of transportation.

Specifically, I'm grateful that I have so many friends who are willing to take on the joys and trials of having kids, so I can have children in my life without having to have my own. You all know, I presume, that I'm happy to pitch in with taking your kids places to give you a bit of a break, right? Just so long as we set a firm end time :)

Further, I'm grateful that I live in a time and place where I can choose to live without a car and still have a multitude of options in front of me for visiting friends and family, not just in the city but also in other cities near and far. Although all travel has an environmental cost, I have, as yet, been unwilling to give up my jaunts, and I'm thankful that I haven't had to. I appreciate how small the world is with our current transportation options, and I strive to take advantage of both the options and the opportunity they give me for perspective-building by making the whole world my home.
