time for a new mattress?

When I thought that I would likely be leaving town within the year, it didn't cross my mind to buy a new mattress for my bed. I'm actually pretty happy with my futon, but it has definitely become compressed in the middle, so it's very nesty. It's 2 years past its 5 year lifespan, so I could say I've gotten a good use out of it. I think I'd be happy to sleep on it for another year, but, on the other hand, now is also a reasonable time to replace it.

So I'm starting to think about what I might want in a new mattress. I don't need a fancy 20 year mattress, because, well, that's just silly. I would probably be happy with the very same futon, if I can figure out what it is, but I could also think about getting something different.

Any thoughts from the peanut gallery? Have you had particularly good experiences with any furniture stores or web sites out there? What about ideas of things to look for in mattresses that I might not have considered?
