Loopt is not intrinsically awesome. It's just something that I want all my friends who I make last-minute plans with in unfamiliar surroundings to have, and she totally qualifies. Also it speeds up and improves the "holy crap I am lost and late" notification process with actual map coordinates.

I dunno about "need", but here are some I have that you might like... LiveJournal, Cocktails+, SnapTell, NYTimes, UrbanSpoon, Yelp, TweetDeck, The Weather Channel, StepTrak Lite (free pedometer), Midomi, Flickit, Whole Foods, Public Radio.

Welcome to the cult. :-)

Seconded!

If we're keeping up with audio apps...

RadioParadise client and the Public Radio selector are great.

Re: Well, this is me
Shazam FTW.

It doesn't have everything I want to know about, but it's got a surprising amount of stuff, and will only get better over time.

iLaid -- The first and only iPhone application that automatically sends a hunky, horny guy to your door for some wall-rattling sex.

Best part -- it's free! Just ask me for my phone number!

FourSquare, because pub-crawling should be a competitive sport!

Fitnio

iWant

Also:

- 1password
- Yelp
- Fandango
- Twitterific
- Facebook
- NY Times

Also worth noting: the mobile version of gmail, google reader and gchat will all install as "apps" on an iphone -- just browse to them with safari, and then save them as a bookmark on the homescreen.

This is what I have on my phone!!

Some of it depends on if you want to pay or not... By the by, you can get Emoji icons free, don't pay for the app, all it does is tell you how!

My favorites, the ones I DEFINITELY use every day are The Weather Chanel, Facebook, Twitterfon, and Epic Pet Wars (Or whatever stupid game I am playing) Flickit is awesome for bulk uploading to Flickr, MotherTED is great for watching TED talks by category,

Alas, I really do have far too many games. But i LIKE games...

So, useful apps:

Wikipanion
Google reader
Rooms (IRC client)
Classics (about 25 'classic' books - i consider this one of the best apps I have. Means I always have a book with me)
The Weather Channel app
iBlogger (for posting to the blog)
Facebook
Twitterrific
FlickIt (for uploading pictures to Flickr)

Games:

Trism
JellyCar (If only for the sounds. Kids love this game)
Enigmo
FlightControl (I suspect you'd like this a lot)
StoneLoops
AirHockey
Word Warp
Knots
Labyrinth
I Dig It
Pocket God (stupid fun)
Dark Nova

Welcome to the tribe!

All of these are free!
Twitterific - I tried several and I like this one the best

Kindle - awesome, plus $10 books! I am currently reading "The End of Overeating

iMapMyRun - can also be used for biking or walking

Whole Foods Recipes - has a search feature that lets you tell it what you have in the house and what you can make from it, also has a ton of recipes that are searchable by course or diet restriction

Pandora - free music, how is that bad?

Remote - control your computer iTunes

Flashlight - because sometimes you need one

Lightsaber - you never know when you will be faced with the forces of the dark side and their tasty, tasty cookies

I just dled the Google app, but I haven't had a chance to play with it yet, so I'm not certain of the extent of it's coolness.

Re: All of these are free!
The Google app is simply a way to Google that's a little easier to manage than firing up Safari. I was surprised how much of a difference that makes, though.

I think people have mentioned most of my favorites (Flight Control is probably the best $0.99 I've ever spent...), but the ones I use most regularly are (besides Maps, Messages and Phone):

Google
NYTimes
Solitaire
Stanza
WeatherBug

Oh, you should check out Pocket Universe. And AllRecipes, BigOven and Epicurious.

Apps I hit the most include:

Useful Things:

Shazam (hey, what's this song??)
Flashlight (years of bumping around dark ambulance bases made cell phones useful in this regard)
Nightstand (I use this for timing sets on stage)
The Weather Channel
CardStar (omg awesome, and really works)
Translator
Flight Track

Substitutes For The Real Thing:

Facebook
AIM (gets a little "push"y + steals focus from other running clients)

Fun & Games:

Zippo Lighter (what a hoot)
Tiny Violin (for pir)

Bejeweled
Solebon Solitaire
Flight Control (yeah, baby)
LightBike (Tron fights for the users!!!)
WildWest (a pinball game)

And the one that nobody else seems to have listed:

MLB At Bat 2009 (baseball fans will go NUTTY on this - I spent about $10 on it but SO worth it)
