It turns out I completely love Berlin.

I find him a little... I dunno... obvious, myself.
Though I admit, I do often tear up at "What'll I do?"

Would you like it as well if you could understand what everyone is saying?

I think so! I mean, lots of the people here speak English, so we're having a much easier time communicating than we did in Poland, and I'm doing much better piecing together meaning of things on menus and such thanks to the whole related languages thing.

It was almost 20 years ago, but it was way too generic of a big city for me.

Frankfurt AM had more character.

Perhaps it's just that 20 years ago you were an insufferable teenager and thus bored on purpose?
crouchback on September 6th, 2009 10:36 pm (UTC)

It was that it was a boring city-it was just too generic. Way too much concrete and housing that looked like it came out of a prefab factory set to "Robert Taylor Homes."

I felt the same way about Dublin and London two years later, but differently about London in 2002-2005.

I'll give it a shot next year-we'll probably stop there on the way from Braunschweig to Vilnius.

I was in Berlin 21 years ago (I was 17), and I thought it was pretty awesome. Maybe you were in East Berlin? I had just been on a bus trip through East Germany with my grandparents for the previous few days, and in comparison West Berlin seemed like a riot of color and sound and modern civilization and a 24/7 party. I imagine it's mellowed a bit since then, but I'm sure a lot of that atmosphere has stuck around.

Must be that I have generic taste!
crouchback on September 6th, 2009 10:37 pm (UTC)
Ha! Or it could be that a) I was wrong, b) Berlin has changed in 20 years or c) you're just finding neat bits I never ran into.

Or d)-we have different tastes.

That is now very much the other way around. Frankfurt has its interesting bits, but Berlin is where it's at in Germany.

Is this a function of the government moving there, or just general economic revival now that the city is united?
ifmanifman on September 6th, 2009 11:43 pm (UTC)
Both, I believe.

I somehow missed that you were visiting Berlin (clearly, I should pay better attention). How long will you be there for?
Do you know lmpshd? He used to live in Cambridge & travel in similar social circles, and just moved to Berlin a short while ago. If you are looking for suggestions of fun things to check out while there (and perhaps a local guide; though I can't speak for the availability of his schedule), he may be useful to contact (I believe that his LJ email would work for that purpose, but I can dig out his other email if it doesn't). He's the former owner of my awesome cat, Janos, and has always been enjoyable company in my experience.
