hang drum
While I was in California, contessagrrl and I passed a cute hippie boy playing an instrument neither of us had ever seen before but the sound of which made my ears (and the rest of me) blissfully happy.

Thanks to the internet and contessagrrl's excellent google-fu, we learned that it's a <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/hang_(musical_instrument)>hang [drum]</a>, invented about 10 years ago by a couple of Swiss guys. It sounds kind of like a cross between a steel drum and a xylophone. Or like a steel drum that's been rubbed in aural butter. It's awesome, and I want one. Unfortunately, they're expensive and kind of hard to get your hands on.

This YouTube video shows that you have to be a hippie boy to really get the hang of it, though.

Wow. It's sort of Steel Pan meets Udu. I'd love to see someone try something like that in ceramic/terra cotta.

(If you've never heard an udu, I'd suggest it. Entirely different, but strangely similar.)

Thank you so much for this pointer!

The Hang will likely remain out of my reach for some time, but I may be able to achieve HAPIness.

I know! I lust for one in my heart!

But you can also make them out of propane tanks. Seems like a fun project. Now...who do we know with power tools?

New CD featuring Hang music
Hi, loved your post about stumbling upon the Hang and the "blissfully happy" results... Matt Venuti just put out a new CD, Hangisphere, that you might like, check out samples here: www.venusians.com/cdreleases (he's got great Hang videos on his YouTube channel too: www.youtube.com/user/hangsoul)

Re: New CD featuring Hang music
Yep, I bought both of his albums off CD Baby, though I'm still finding Dante Bucci's music the perfect alignment of the sound and my taste, so far.

They are amazing, aren't they...

I am blessed, and cursed, in that a few of my friends have Hangs, and *oh* do I want one...

I first heard a Hang 3 or 4 years ago, at Rites of Spring.

We've had as many as 3 Hangs there at once, but I think only two have ever been played at once (mixing different tunings can sound great, or awful).

Two people playing the same Hang can be a special wonder.

There's nothing quite like staying up all night drumming and dancing, and then in the quiet gloaming of the dawn, shifting toward dreamtime with some Hang.
