Indicating his twisted legs without a trace of self-pity or bitterness, as if they belong to all of us, he casts his arms wide to the sky and the snow mountains, the high sun and the dancing sheep, and cries, "Of course I am happy here! It's wonderful! Especially when I have no choice!"
- Peter Matthiessen, The Snow Leopard

“Magic is always impossible,” said the magician. “It begins with the impossible and ends with the impossible and is impossible in between. That is why it is magic.”

"Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could; some blunders and absurdities have crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; you shall begin it serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense." - R. W. Emerson

"Happiness comes in small doses folks. It's a cigarette butt, or a chocolate chip cookie or a five second orgasm. You come, you smoke the butt you eat the cookie you go to sleep wake up and go back to fucking work the next morning, THAT'S IT! End of fucking list!"

That's sort of inspirational?
Spikespike on November 24th, 2009 06:09 pm (UTC)
I think I am "inspired" not always by light and cheer, but sometimes also by by realistic or even pessimistic comments that set the bar low. And low expectations are a key to happiness in life!

I have that, too. I find both kinds inspiring, comforting, satisfying in different ways, both valuable.

You see, I'd say happiness is the ability to recognize and be in those moments when they happen, and I think that's HUGE.

You have to embrace failure with enthusiasm to succeed

I don't remember the provenance of some of these, but right now they're what's stuck to my computer monitor:

ETA: But I do have some favorite inspirational stuff

you can dream a little dream

"I have learned that people will forget what you said, and forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." -- Maya Angelou

"There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having been originally breathed into a few forms or into one; and that, whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being, evolved." -- Charles Darwin, On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, pg. 490 (1st ed.)

"Beyond the wall of the unreal city, beyond the security fences topped with barbed wire and razor wire, beyond the asphalt belting of the superhighways, beyond the cemented banksides of our temporarily stopped and mutilated rivers, beyond the rage of lies that poisons the air, there is another world waiting for you. It is the old true world of the deserts, the mountains, the forests, the islands, the shores, the open plains. Go there. Be there. Walk gently and quietly deep within it. And then?"
