Do you sometimes enjoy making a spectacle of yourself? If so, what conditions or circumstances make it the right time for that?

Hmm...really making a spectacle of myself? That's usually inspired by the desire to entertain small children, actually.

No, but that doesn't stop me from doing it occasionally.

Depends what you mean by “spectacle”. I perform on stage, and I suppose that meets the technical definition. And I’m a total exhibitionist, in, you know, contexts where total exhibitionism is appropriate.

If you mean “look foolish by doing something in public I’m not good at”, I’m not particularly averse to that, but I don’t actually enjoy the making-a-spectacle aspect. If I’m doing something like that, though, It’s almost certainly because I enjoy the activity itself (despite not being good at it), so I enjoy the whole process that includes making a spectacle of myself.

If you mean “be the center of attention”, then that’s very complicated and situational; I have times and situations (like on stage, or at a birthday party or something like that) where I do, but also times and situations where I very much don’t. (As a child, my father was constantly bragging about me, to the extent of making stuff up, and often at the expense of my sister, so I have a residual aversion to being made a fuss over in some ways.)

You know people that can answer "No" to this (aside from the people who will say "no, I ALWAYS enjoy it")?

I would have lost that bet.

In response to your query, I should say that I never enjoy making a spectacle of myself and always maintain a reserved, decorous bearing.

I rarely enjoy it; almost never. I'm *willing* to make a spectacle of myself more often than I enjoy it. Usually it's when I'm speaking up on an important issue and/or on my own behalf.

No, I really never do.
I do it anyway sometimes, though.

I think my life *is* a spectacle. If it isn't, I'm probably not doing it right.

Yes, sometimes. Being a Mandarin-speaking round-eye in rural China pretty much guarantees it. (So does being a lefty in public, by the way.)

Most of the circumstances have to do with being a Western tourist in an unusual place. I am the American who talks with the Peruvian avocado vendor, eats breakfast at the illegal Cuban bakery stand, tries the (well-cooked) mystery meat skewer at the meat market, shows a Yunan tribeswoman how Americans knit in return for seeing how she does it, watches carefully while the old Vietnamese lady shows the ignorant foreigner the *right* way to eat a hardboiled egg.

Making a spectacle of myself in other circumstances isn't as attractive. It took me a while to learn in my gut that most people don't care enough to even think about how badly I dance.

I do it every year at Defcon. Something about public speaking and alcohol....

I always enjoy making a spectacle of myself if I'm feeling confident about both what I'm doing and how I look (which is far from constantly true).

And I guess also have strong temptations toward épater le bourgeoisie, at least sometimes.

Yes, but then I am a ham, and an actor, and any other number of things that fit well with spectacle.
