I always have another bottle at hand, but in this case, it was another corkscrew!

Butterfly corkscrews are the worst. I use either a professional screw with the single edge-catch blade or one of the newish rabbit style screws. Butterfly openers have a longstanding reputation of hosing corks.

I find butterfly corkscrews easier to operate than the professional variety and more affordable than the rabbit ones. I've actually never had trouble breaking corks with them, and this is the first time I've broken the screw while trying to open a bottle. The cork above is a mess because I used a second corkscrew alongside the first one to get it out.
