Dear Young People:

Posting pictures to facebook of yourself and your friends smoking pot in a car will someday strike you as incredibly dumb. If you keep doing it, someday might be really soon

One of my cousins has posted many pics of himself smoking pot to Myspace. He also decided to post pics of himself playing around with handguns while wearing a bandanna over his face like he was a robber from an old movie. It made my head explode.

PS. The pics of him putting a dog's face at a bong, not actually hilarious.

When contemplating dating (for lack of a better word) someone, when she posted just such a set of pictures, that was it for me. It showed such a lack of good sense, self-awareness, reality, and consequences, I bailed right then and there. It's possible that person hasn't been seen (by me) since. I'm OK with this. I was amazed that her reaction was "WTF? Why are you bent out of shape about this?"

Considering how common this sort of thing is now, I have to figure that the consequences of having done it, as time goes by, will not actually be as severe (or as likely, or both) as us old folks think now. Admittedly, I don't really see what's pleasurable about posting stoned photos to facebook, so I don't know why it's worth any risk, and my brain is screaming "It's different when it's ILLEGAL." But culture is changing, and I think "shocking" is much worse than "illegal", in terms of whether a given authority figure will be moved to come down on you for something.

[Ugh. I wrote this and immediately felt like a naive techno-utopian pinhead. But on the other hand, when you look at the warnings people made about internet activity ten years ago, the "do you really want an employer to see you with pink hair?" category seem the least credible.]

[Also, I love your tag. I was disappointed there were no other entries when I clicked on it. :) ]

It's just slightly different when it's offenses for which you can be jailed, or used against you later like in the cases of Jesse Logan and Hope Witsell.

Criminy, I just can't get this comment right. Sorry, folks.

Yeah, I was surprised this was the first time I'd ever needed that tag!

It seriously just blows my mind. In my youth, we didn't even talk about drugs over the PHONE.

Addendum: Perhaps a car isn't the best place to smoke pot to begin with?
