burning hair question
The last time I went to Burning Man, I got my hair twisted, with extensions, so it looked like this:

Your snackchef, Rosa Fine layer of dust and Rosa

This year, I was figuring I wouldn't do anything special with my hair, but I'm starting to rethink that. The twists were awfully fun. But also costly and, for the first couple of days, pretty painful.

Therefore, I turn to you, livejournal, for this very important question:

For Burning Man this year, what should aroraborealis do with her hair?

twists
4(13.8%)
braids
16(55.2%)
nothing special
6(20.7%)
other (describe below)
3(10.3%)

I vote braids because I remember you saying that regular hair was kind of a pain at burning man.

Yeah, I have this fantasy that I know better now than I did my first year, buuuut... If I'm wrong, I have 10 days of sucky hair instead of fun hair!
Kcatkcatalyst on August 11th, 2010 11:03 pm (UTC)
On the other hand, trying out a potentially futile fantasy is a great way to make "nothing special" into something special!

We could always take a shot at braiding your hair on-playa if you turn out to hate it loose.

I'm torn!

I think you might enjoy NOT having your hair in braids or twists, especially now that you better understand on-playa hair care for your hair.

On the other hand, you know the braids/twists work well for you. Is it worth the time and money investment to you? Also, since you have pretty short hair, what about doing shorter braids/twists? Even more like shoulder-length should be less painful to adjust to.

One thing I notice is that you look like a different you (to me) in (the pictures of) the twists you did previously. Some people seem to really like that on playa (see: playa names, alter egos) and some people really don't like that (see: I get to be my Real Self (tm) on playa). Perhaps that's worth thinking about?

Interesting point about different "me"s. I think I like both! But this is worth thinking about, for sure. Thanks!

It occurs to me that dye is inexpensive and not painful. I like braids on other people (it looks weird on me) but I don't want to impose my yearnings on someone else's head.

Well, I always have a chunk of dyed hair in the front, so that's part of "nothing special" for me! To get really noticeable color in my hair requires bleaching, too, but I could do a color rinse just for general effect. Thanks for the thoughts!

Or, you know, you could, if you wanted to, bleach your whole head and do (a) color(s) all over. When you want your hair back to normal you just re-dye to your natural (or preferred) color. I'm amazed at what a barrier I *thought* all-over dying would be compared to what little-deal it really is.

this is a very good point :)

The twists look *very* cool! Did you take them out before you came back home last year?
ruthless compassionaroraborealis on August 12th, 2010 04:26 am (UTC)
I came home with them but then took them out in my first days back!

man I loved those twists.....at least all the pix I've seen!!
I feel bad voting purely on aesthetics, not on comfort, but there you go.
ruthless compassionaroraborealis on August 12th, 2010 04:26 am (UTC)
Aesthetics matter!!

I'd love to do dreads someday, so I'm recommending this to live vicariously through you. :n)

Shave it!

Dan's godmother shaved her head for ease during her climb of Denali.
I vote for gel. It's cheap and does anything.
PS, her X lost his primary bid for Congress, yay.

I <3 the braids. But you need to do what works best for you, not what I think is hot. :)
DancingWolfGrrldancingwolfgrrl on August 14th, 2010 11:13 pm (UTC)
I haven't found braids painful, which is why I vote for them over twists, but obviously YMMV. I would cry sad tears on the playa without *some* hair-management strategy, though.
