the computer is dead! long live the computer!
A couple of weekends ago, my trusty laptop bit the dust. Well, its hard drive did, anyway. And while installing a new hard drive, spike and I discovered that the damage was worse than we realized, and that the whole thing was now only good for parts.

This was NOT good news. I like a computer to last a lot longer, and I haven't really been planning to spend the money on a new machine, and, of course, it had been far too long since I'd backed up my data. Blah blah blah. On the other hand, my computer took a very nasty fall over the winter and has never been the same since (and WTF is wrong with me that I didn't do a backup after that? seriously.)

ANYWAY. There is some good news that follows on this, and that's that I get a new computer out of the deal! It arrived today and I can barely resist firing it up at work.

But you can help me! What should I name my new computer*?

Also, if you've been thinking about sending me some music that you think I'd like, now is a great time, because I hadn't backed up my music collection at all because [redacted for stupidness].

*My naming scheme usually has some northerly reference (aroraborealis, ultima thule, polaris), but I'm open to other excellent name possibilities, too.
I'm feeling: okaymixed

Freya? :)

Valhalla! Or Asgard.

I worry about giving my computer the name of a deity. It seems like asking for trouble!

Bocado, like mouthful?

It was one translation of "snack" that I found. :)

I second Freya!

Also, Alula, Tania, or Talitha.

I love names. :)

Variations on a theme?
Tenanda, which isn't quite due north, but close.

Dieztrenta IS almost exactly due north, but not gramatical. Diezymedia? ("Ditzy media!")

Half Past Ten - sort of British sounding, and faintly mysterious for a computer name!
I think "Half Past Ten" is my favorite in this vein so far.

So...uh...see where I went with this?

I was going to suggest Crocker Land an arctic "island" spotted by Robert Peary which lead to an ill-fated exploration in 1913 to find it.

Turns out the whole thing was just a mirage known as a Fata Morgana. Upon further reflection I think calling your new machine Fata Morgana would be more awesome.

hokuto no ken?

(n.b.: i've only seen the movie. the main feature of the movie, which seems to be coyly glossed over in the wikipedia article, is that the hero's special power is that whenever he hits someone, their head explodes. it's possible that computer hardware problems make me feel like this a lot.)

I know a guy who raises huskies and runs the Iditarod.
Even if the MacBook is pure white, you don't want to name it that. Really.

Or for that matter, Peter.

This is the 13.3" model, right?

What kind of machine did you get? And what sorts of tunes tend to strike your fancy?

I don't have name suggestions right now, but I do have a possible backup suggestion. I kept failing to do regular backups for years and realized finally that this was not something I could count on myself to do. I looked at various online services that back things up for you automatically once a day. I eventually went with Mozy; I'm not at all sure it's the best option out there. But it has saved my ass through several computer deaths.
